Iberian Regions

Wine production has been an integral part of life in Penedés for over 2,500 years, making it one of the oldest wine regions in the world. The vineyards extend from the Mediterranean beaches of "El Garraf" up into the highest mountains of Tarragona and yield a correspondingly varied assortment of styles. By the sea in "El Bajo", up to 250 meters altitude, the red Garnacha , Monastrell and Cariñena flourish. Inland in El Medio, between 250 and 500 meters, the white Macabeo , Xarel-lo , and tempranillo prosper. In "El Superior", at 500 meters and up, a cooler climate facilitates the growth of the parellada and foreign varietals. The region dominates the production of Spanish sparkling wine or Cava but was also the first in Spain to produce internationally acclaimed wines from non-Spanish varieties, most famously the Gran Coronas Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon from Miguel Torres which opened the world´s eyes to Spain´s potential in the 1970s.
