Iberian Regions

The Alentejo region is a vast region east and south of Lisbon that encompasses nearly a third of the land area of Portugal.  The region is relatively flat and lacks sufficient rainfall.  Until recently, Alentejo was known mainly for wheat and cork farms, accounting for nearly all of the cork grown in Portugal.  The European Union invested in Alentejo, which lead to improvements in viticulture and winemaking.  With modern technology and irrigation, Alentejo is making positive strides in winemaking.
